ABOUT THE CORNEA

The cornea is the clear front window of the eye that allows light to enter and results in clear vision. Corneal diseases can lead to clouding and distortion of vision which can be caused by various factors such as:

  • Infections, inflammation, or corneal abrasions that cause a sensation of foreign objects in the eye, sensitivity to light, and discomfort.
  • Corneal ulcers and infections can result from bacterial or viral causes.
  • Contact lenses, when used improperly, can lead to oxygen deficiency in the cornea, causing redness, irritation, and blurred vision.
  • Excessively dry eyes can damage the cornea and be cause discomfort.
  • Keratoconus results in distorted vision due to the cornea’s abnormal shape.
  • Fuchs’ endothelial dystrophy may cause glare, cloudy vision, and pain, as well as blurred vision.

Causes of Corneal Disease:

  • Infections: Bacterial, fungal, and viral infections are common causes.
  • Keratoconus: The causes of this condition remain unknown.
  • Age: Aging processes can affect corneal health and clarity of vision.
  • Heredity, eye trauma, certain systemic diseases, and contact lens use also affect the eyes.

Diagnosing Corneal Disease:

Eye doctors use binocular microscopes and advanced diagnostic technology, such as corneal topography, to detect signs of corneal infection, inflammation, and scarring. Special dyes may be employed to assess surface corneal damage.

Prevention and Treatment for Corneal Disease:

The cornea, often described as the eye’s window, is a complex and vital structure for healthy vision. If you experience symptoms like redness, blurred vision, light sensitivity, or eye pain, you may be dealing with a corneal condition and you should see Omega Eye Center for a corneal examination.  Timely corneal treatment is critical, with topical antibiotics and steroids being common options.  Advanced conditions may require additional consultation, treatment, and surgical plans that we will discuss at your visit if necessary.
